Social media is a land of pixie dust and fairy tales. It is the place where dreams go to die and get replaced by somebody else’s reality. It is the place where other people are; making more money, having more fun, standing out in the crowd, sporting a sexier body and living La Vida Loca. This is the land that seems to have forgotten the rest of us. Social media is the new place that reminds you how important it is to keep up with the Joneses.

The Land of Social Media

But, is what we’re seeing the truth?

  • Do we know the full story of that person’s journey?
  • What did it take for them to get to this place?
  • What did they sacrifice? How hard did they work?

As a small business owner I know all too well how important it is to remember to pat yourself on the back and honor your personal journey. We’re all so busy trying to make it in this world and learn from other people it’s easy to get caught up in their accomplishments and lose focus on ourselves. The grass is often greener on the other side because we can’t see the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into that person getting to where they are today.

Five Ways to Shift Your Focus

  1. Celebrate the easy wins – waking up, moving your body, and having mental clarity are easy wins you can celebrate everyday.
  2. Reduce your social media addiction – log off from social media in your smart phone and while working online, add social media time to your schedule and set your alarm, and make a cut off time for surfing the internet.
  3. Begin with the end in sight – create your personal vision, visualize the outcome and plant the seeds.
  4. Keep a Reflective Journalreflective journaling involves the regular practice of recording activities and/or situations with the goal of achieving personal and professional growth by reflecting on those experiences and engaging in self-discovery.
  5. Practice Gratitude – record the best thing(s) that happened to you at the end of each day then call it a wrap and go to sleep.

The Lesson

No better words have ever been spoken than these around this subject. No lusting after your neighbor’s house—or wife or servant or maid or ox or donkey. Don’t set your heart on anything that is your neighbor’s. Exodus 20:17 (MSG)

Learn to give thanks for your own peaks and valleys. Remember that they have shaped you into the person that you are and given you the voice that tells your story.
