With two months remaining in 2016 and coming off a milestone birthday weekend, I’ve spent some time processing my year and thinking about how I can successfully reach the finish line. For the last three years, I have identified a theme that reflects my intention for living my life during that year. What I have learned is that despite my good intentions God always has a bigger and better plan.
My theme this year was SHINE. I knew that it was my time to let my shine. However, what I’ve really experienced this year has been TRUST. The importance of me trusting God to provide for all of my needs and to take me where I need to go.
A Trusting Heart
How did I get from where I was to a trusting heart (Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding)? I embraced these 5 ways of being into my prayer life and lifestyle.
- Specific
- Action
- Surrendered
- Released
- Trust
Specific
My prayers became specific. I stopped the wishy-washy open-ended prayers and I asked for what I needed and where I needed God to show up (Matthew 21:22 If you believe you will receive what you ask for in prayer.).
Action
When I asked I started to live my life as if that prayer had already been answered. I needed a new car and I began to make my selection. I went for test drives and I compared my choices at Consumer Reports. I researched reviews and I narrowed down my options (James 2:14 My brothers and sisters, if a person claims to have faith but does nothing, that faith is worth nothing. Faith like that cannot save anyone.).
Surrendered
I surrendered my limiting beliefs (Romans 12:2 Don’t change yourselves to be like the people of this world, but let God change you inside with a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to understand and accept what God wants for you. You will be able to know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect.).
Released
I released myself from the expectations that I placed on myself and those self-defeating thoughts called comparison. I allowed myself to enjoy my greatness and my unique pathway (1 Peter 2:9 But you are his chosen people, the King’s priests. You are a holy nation, people who belong to God).
Trust
And when I was done I allowed myself to free fall into his arms (Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.).
When it’s All Said and Done
If you have trust issues with a person take those issues to the Lord. If you have trust issues with God, he’s ready to listen.
